Moreover, tech giants invested heavily in AI startups to get ahead in the trend and keep up with the smooth functioning (Amazon to Compete in the AI Race With up to a $4 Billion Investment in Anthropic). However, governments across the globe paid serious attention to AI regulations to avoid exploitation(AI Regulation Meet: Top AI Firms to Visit the White House). So have we reached the top in the advancements in AI?
Before answering that question let’s see the AI trends and news that went viral in 2023.

2023 in Review

Starting from Pope’s image to Sam Altman getting fired from OpenAI, we have covered some of the biggest events that happened last year.
  • A Chicago man in March 2023 created an AI-generated image of Pope wearing a white puffer jacket using the AI image generator Midjourney, showcasing how powerful AI is in deceiving humans.
  • In March, Tech chiefs including Elon Musk and Steve Wozniak wrote an open letter requesting AI organizations to halt training for six months due to potential risks such as loss of civilization control, job destruction, and human annihilation.
  • Meta’s large language model, LLaMA, got leaked in the same month along with its weights, on 4Chan’s technology board and was available for download through torrents globally. This became a source of tools for the open-source community in the AI industry.
  • Since the launch of Bing Chat in February 2023, Microsoft kept bringing innovation. They introduced Copilot, a widespread application of AI. Microsoft integrated Copilot into Word, Teams, and Windows 11, automating tasks like image creation and meeting summarization, to highlight the capability of AI.
  • Reports suggested AI can take 300 million jobs if left in the dark. In addition to that, Hollywood authors went on strike over the use of AI in filmmaking. Moreover, writers in September filed a class action suit against AI organizations for using their works to teach their LLMs.
  • In November 2023, the OpenAI board fired CEO Sam Altman leading to resignations and chaos. However, Microsoft offered jobs to him and other employees who resigned. Altman was reinstated later and OpenAI got fresh board members.

5 Advancements To Look Forward in AI in 2024

AI advancements are continuous and we think more innovations are coming in AI in 2024. Let us take a look.

1. Businesses Will Incorporate AI Into More Products

In 2024, the growth of incorporating AI into products and services will accelerate. This is because of AI’s capability to enhance experience, decision-making, and automate tasks. It can drastically impact the data and analytics lifecycles. So most Big Data problems and data science projects will have efficiency.
AI in 2024 will be accessible for organizations as it will solve a complex problem of data quality checks with the help of augmented tools. With AI integration and automation, Business Intelligence tools will provide a more seamless and interactive experience, ensuring that users engage with data in a natural language interface.

2. Convergence of AI and IoT

When AI and IoT are infused into an organization, it brings scalability, security and privacy, synergism, and reliability. IoT is the network of physical devices, gadgets, sensors, appliances, and vehicles that are connected to the internet and can communicate with each other. Though it can collect a significant amount of data and analyze it, it also poses security threats.
This is why infusing IoT and AI in 2024 is ideal. AI can help IoT in processing and interpreting data with the help of techniques like Machine Learning, computer vision, natural language processing, and speech recognition. Moreover, AI can assist in creating new applications and services based on the data collected by IoT.

3. Combining AI and Cryptocurrency

Cryptocurrency is a type of digital currency designed to work as a medium of exchange through a computer network. It is not issued by a central authority like a government or bank but is based on a network of decentralized peer-to-peer transactions. In 2024, we will see AI and cryptocurrency combined which is known as AI Crypto.
It is paving new roads for users in the AI and crypto space. AI crypto will create a pattern of intelligence and systematic processes that can change various sectors and industries. With AI the transactions can be automated and users can have utmost security, without any third-party involvement.

4. A More Realistic and Higher Quality Generation

In 2023, we saw inclusivity and diversity in all sectors and industries but many AI organizations didn’t include them in their services. AI in 2024 will witness much more inclusivity and diversity. Most enterprises are trying to make it as realistic as possible for a higher user experience.
Transparency is another thing we can see in AI happening as many content creation and publishing websites use AI-generated content and don’t put a disclaimer for the same. This can be misleading and won’t provide accurate information to the people. So it is ideal that enterprises will practice diversity and transparency in 2024.

5. Enterprises Will Perform Responsible AI

In 2023, people around the world raised questions about AI harming students and employees. So many governments framed policies governing AI usage in 2023. It will be a noteworthy watch to see what changes will be made in AI in 2024 in these policies.
For enterprises, only the EU made AI Act and policies but by June 2024 two US states California and Colorado will adopt regulations addressing automated decision-making regarding consumer privacy. Enterprises will need to figure out the applicable laws and work according to them. While these regulations are for AI systems that are trained or collect personal information, both offer consumers the right to opt out of the use of these systems. So it will be significant to see enterprises navigate responsible AI.

On a Final Note

AI in 2024 will see some critical advancements and technological evolutions. In 2023, we didn’t reach the highest advancements but will reach new heights in 2024. It will increase productivity, efficiency, and scalability for people from all walks of life. Businesses have to adapt to many changes and keep bringing innovation to stay in the competition keeping the new AI regulations in mind. So the journey ahead may look rocky in the AI trends but it will make work, education, and other aspects simpler for users.

Bard is integrated with all these services and can use data from them as and when required, depending on the query and needed responses. Google also said Bard is getting better at creating and customizing responses. Also, they have improved the ‘Google it’ feature to double-check Bard’s answers.

How Will Bard Function?

The updated Bard will search and display answers by finding the crucial data across all the services and giving custom answers. It will also be able to get data and provide relevant information on flights and hotels.
When working in Google Drive, users can ask it to search for any specific file or document. For example, you can ask Bard to search for a specific report from December 2022, and compile it into a short paragraph.
Google pointed out that the data used will not be accessed by human reviewers, Bard to show ads, or used to train the large language models. Additionally, users will also have the option to choose how they want to use these extensions or turn them off at any time.

Chat Collaboration on Bard

In times when users want to share chat and access conversations with AI chatbots with friends or family the most common thing you do is provide a link. Google is now making it easy by adding a new update for Bard. When a user sends a conversation by a public link, the receiver can continue the conversation with the chatbot and even ask additional questions about the topic.
Google is also growing access to the existing English language features. This will include the ability to upload images with Lens, get Search images in response, and modify Bard’s responses to more than 40 languages.
With this new power-up for Bard and under-development AI tool ‘Genesis’, Google seems to be setting itself up for market domination. What are your thoughts on the new Google Bard Features? Let us know in the comment section.

Snapchat is getting ready to venture into the world of generative AI technologies. This news comes following Snapchat’s introduction of its chatbot ‘My AI’ earlier this year. The ‘My AI’ chatbot can provide visual responses with Images in addition to text. Indicating that Snapchat’s AI can be the next big thing for Social Media Platforms.

Snapchat is now experimenting with AI images with its next generative AI tool named ‘Dreams’. But soon, those photographs might include you and your friends in imaginative surroundings.

Snapchat ‘My AI’

The app made headlines in April when it revealed that the ‘My AI’ function would be available to all users worldwide. Essentially, removing the need for a paid subscription to access it.

The business’s decision targets ChatGPT’s capabilities as they are integrated within the app and want to make this feature free for all.

Personalization of user answers through ‘My AI’ created encounters that resembled chats with friends. These interactions included suggestions for vacation destinations, lens ideas, and helpful text-based chat responses. The chatbot was created to provide instantaneous responses akin to human-like interactions and was built using OpenAI’s GPT technology.

The New Features of Snapchat’s Upcoming Generative AI

Steve Moser is an app researcher and developer. According to him, the company has been working on features that will let Snapchat users capture or upload selfies that will enable the program to make new pictures of you in different scenarios. This sounds comparable to features seen in other AI photo apps available on the App Store.

Instead, according to Moser’s research, Dreams envisions a way to use AI-generated selfies to put pictures of you in fantastic places and scenarios. Snapchat would need clean selfies to work with. Not the ones with other people in them or ones where your features are hidden. Users will receive advice from the program on how to take better AI images by using a variety of viewpoints, facial expressions, and lighting conditions.

Snapchat Dreams with Friends

The company is also working on a feature called ‘Dreams with Friends’ where users may authorize their friends to produce these AI images that feature them. In addition to enabling you to enter these AI Dreams, this function is also under development.

Dream Packs are mentioned in the Snapchat app, which further suggests that this feature may someday be a monetizable option.

Is it Worth the Hype?

Maybe or maybe not! But one thing is for sure, the industry is getting familiar with AI instead of neglecting it. If Snapchat pulls this off, it would be an industry game-changer. Also, it would give users new ways to create/generate snaps. AI is changing the world, but it is unclear if it is for good or bad.

A new evolution is taking place in today’s era i.e. AI evolution. The only reason everybody is betting on the AI industry after the Open AI game-changing tool ChatGPT. Evolution is good in every aspect, but it also brings some other destructive things with it. Hence, AI regulation is important for the masses.

For the same, the Biden administration will hold a meeting to collect “voluntary Commitments” from 7 of the top AI firm developers to attain shared security and transparency goals ahead of a planned Executive Order.

Since Open AI’s tool ChatGPT, the AI Industry has been moving at lightning speed. Everybody including journalists and the White House has been worried that it should not get carried away. The Top AI Companies will be taking part in the non-binding agreement and send their representatives to the White House to meet with President Biden today. The Names of the companies are OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Inflection, Microsoft, Meta, and Amazon.

To be clear, no rule or enforcement is being suggested here. The agreed-upon procedures are entirely optional. However, if a business avoids a few, no government agency will hold it accountable, and it will probably be public knowledge.

Following is a list of members to visit the White House:

  • Brad Smith, President, Microsoft
  • Kent Walker, President, Google
  • Dario Amodei, CEO, Anthropic
  • Mustafa Suleyman, CEO, Inflection AI
  • Nick Clegg, President, Meta
  • Greg Brockman, President, OpenAI
  • Adam Selipsky, CEO, Amazon Web Services

The Guidelines and Suggestions Made

The above seven firms and others who want to join have committed to the following:

    • Before release, AI systems undergo internal and external security checks, including aggressive “red teaming” by independent specialists outside the company.

    • Information on AI threats and mitigation strategies (such as preventing “jailbreaking”) should be shared between the government, academia, and “civil society”.

    • To safeguard private model data like weights, make investments in cybersecurity and “insider threat safeguards”. This is crucial not only to safeguard intellectual property but also because an opportunity for malicious actors could arise from an early widespread release.

    • Help third parties find and report vulnerabilities, for example, through a bug bounty program or a domain expert analysis.

    • Create reliable watermarking or another method of marking content produced by AI.

    • The “capabilities, limitations, and areas of appropriate and inappropriate use” of AI systems should be reported. You’ll have a hard time getting an honest response to this.

    • Prioritize research studies on societal dangers like systematic bias or privacy concerns as a top priority.

    • Create and implement AI “to help address society’s greatest challenges” like cancer prevention and climate change. (However, it was mentioned in a press call that the carbon impact of AI models was not being monitored.)

Even though the above-mentioned actions are optional, it is easy to conceive that the threat of an Executive Order, which they are currently developing, exists to encourage compliance. For instance, the E.O. may create language instructing the FTC to carefully examine AI products that claim robust security if some companies refuse to permit external security testing of their models before release. (One E.O. is already in effect and requests that agencies be vigilant against bias in the creation and application of AI.)

A Step Towards Responsible AI Development by Leading Companies

The White House wants to be ahead of the next AI revolution by monitoring and understanding the AI threats that may come along with the massive wave of technology. Both the President and the Vice President have met with business executives to seek their input on a national AI strategy and are allocating a sizeable amount of funds to new AI research facilities and initiatives.

Also, this is a good move to safeguard the beneficiaries along with a hope to control the AI revolution. If attained, it will be a fall well handled!

Google is testing a product(Genesis AI) that uses Artificial Intelligence technology to produce news stories. Now the company is pitching that AI product to the news organization as stated by sources familiar with the matter. News Organizations such as The New York Times, The Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal, News Corp are amongst the ones that Google is in contact with.

Genesis is the rumored name of the tool, given by internal people working on it. It can take in information and produce news material (for example, specifics of current events). It was specified by the people on the condition to keep anonymity.

Google believes Genesis could serve as a personal assistant to journalists by saving their time to focus on other important tasks. The company believed it to be a responsible technology that might help lead the publishing industry away from the threats of generative AI.

Some Comments on the Topic

Google spokesperson Jenn Crider said in a statement to the Verge “In partnership with news publishers, especially smaller publishers, we are in the initial stages of exploring ideas to provide A.I.-enabled tools to help their journalists with their work”. She also added these tools aren’t intended to replace the essential role of a journalist in reporting, creating, and fact-checking their articles.

Professor of Journalism and Media Analyst Jeff Jarvis said the new tool from Google has potential benefits and drawbacks as described.

News organizations are still in a dilemma about whether to use AI tools in their newsroom. In a News Organization, where seconds are worth millions there is no chance of errors because their reputation is at stake.

Many publications including The Times, NPR, and Insider, have informed staff members that they are exploring potential applications of AI. In order to determine if it might be wisely applied to the highly charged field of journalism.

Should News Organizations Use AI?

AI enables users to produce content on a larger scale, which, if not carefully reviewed and verified, may disseminate false information and affect how people view stories that have been traditionally published.

While Google has developed and used generative AI at an astounding pace, the technology has also brought significant difficulties for the giants of advertising.

Many prominent A.I. firms, like Google, have come under fire from publishers and other content creators for exploiting decades’ worth of their articles and postings as training data for their systems without paying the authors. NBC News and The Times are two news organizations that have spoken out against AI programs stealing their data without their consent.

Google Bard in its latest update has included 40 more languages and many more. Bard’s History

Google Bard, a competitor to Open AI’s ChatGPT, was launched on March 21, 2023. Since then, it has been constantly updated by the company. The platform has received an update on boosting the user’s productivity and receiving customized responses. Bard is constantly working on making itself better than its competitors. It has increased its reach by being available in the most widely spoken language.
Let’s have a look at the new features that Google has added to Bard.

More Customized Responses

You may now listen to Bard’s comments starting today. This is very useful if you want to hear how to pronounce a word correctly or listen to a poem or script. To hear Bard’s responses, simply type a prompt and click the sound icon.

Bard’s comments can also be altered in five distinct ways: basic, long, short, professional, or informal. You can use the drop-down to shorten Bard’s response when you request it to write a marketplace listing for an antique armchair. This functionality is currently available in English and will be expanded to other languages shortly.

Boost Your Productivity

After listening to the users, Bard enabled the option to go back and review prompts. When you start a topic, the sidebar now includes options to pin, rename, and pick up recent discussions. For example, if we ask Bard to compare summer sports, it goes back and evaluates its opinion afterward.

Additionally, the use of Bard for coding jobs continues to be popular. So, in addition to Google Colab, Google Bard will be releasing a new feature on the 13th of July. It’ll allow you to export Python code to Replit.

Further in productivity improvements, sharing a portion or all of your Bard talk with your network has been made simpler. You can share your thoughts and projects with others by using shareable links.

A significant element of how we use our imaginations is through images. Google announced at I/O that it will be integrating Google Lens features into Bard. This will allow you to upload photographs with prompts and Bard will analyze the photo to aid you. Whether you want additional information about an image or just need help coming up with a caption. Unlike other features, this is only available in English, and it will be expanded to other languages soon.

Final Word

Technological advancements are happening every single day, new updates are being rolled out each day, new competitors are coming, and whatnot. Each platform is trying hard to be more customer-centric by providing them with the best they can. What do you think about these new updates? Will Google’s Bard be able to capture more market share? We’ll have to wait and see

The most recent information indicates that OpenAI, the business that started the AI race with the highly effective chatbot ChatGPT, has established a specialized team to oversee and manage ‘super-intelligent’ AI systems. Ilya Sutskever, one of the organization’s founders and chief researcher, was appointed head.

According to an OpenAI blog post, AI capable of outperforming the human mind could come within a decade. At the same time, it is not required for this ‘supermind’ to be beneficial to humans; consequently, methods of controlling and limiting the powers of such systems must be developed.

Super-intelligent AI cannot yet be managed or controlled in a way that prevents aggression on its behalf, claims OpenAI. Existing artificial intelligence optimization systems rely on human feedback-based reinforcement learning. Simultaneously, such strategies are dependent on the assumption that humans can, in theory, regulate AI. Which is doubtful for systems that are potentially more intelligent than humans. A specialized team will have access to 20% of the company’s computing resources to study this issue. Scientists and programmers from the company’s AI customization section and other departments are also there. The team hopes to master the key technical hurdles connected with directing super-intelligent AI during the next four years.

We’re discussing the use of feedback in AI training. To assess other AI systems, provide the needed outcomes, and ensure their operational reliability, a unique AI is used. OpenAI believes AI will manage this more quickly and effectively than humans. Companies are anticipated to take on an increasing number of activities as artificial intelligence develops, necessitating the development and application of better adaptation technologies than those that are currently available. They will collaborate with humans to better adapt their generations. Also, to the requirements of humans, who are merely serving as supervisors and not taking part in the actual study.

Future of Superintelligent AI

As mentioned in OpenAI, no approach has absolute error prevention. Using one AI to evaluate others might increase the number of faults and vulnerabilities in the AIs developed. This indicates that the most difficult portion of customization is related to the most unexpected aspects of how the AI functions. However, the company argues that optimizing superintelligence is primarily a machine-learning task.  Therefore, experts in this field will be critical. In the future, the business intends to share the findings of its research with others. In order to establish and secure initiatives, including those unconnected to OpenAI.

The attempt’s critics assert that AI could surpass human intellect even before it commits to protecting the security of other AI systems, according to Reuters. In an open letter published in April, experts and business pioneers issued a strong warning against developing an AI that is more advanced than GPT-4.

Meta recently published a deep dive into company social media algorithms to make user easier to understand how content is recommended on Facebook and Instagram.

Millions of people use Meta’s Facebook and Instagram to go social every day. There have been many privacy concerns raised by users on Meta in the past. Since to keep business transparency the platform has decided to let the users know how AI influences what they see.

Meta’s President of Global Affairs Nick Clegg, in a blog post, said, “As a part of the company’s ‘wider ethos of openness, transparency, and accountability,’ the information dump on the AI systems that power its algorithms explained what Facebook and Instagram users can do to have more control over the content they view on the sites.” He also added that, “the company is testing new controls, making some more accessible, and making it clearer how you can better control what you see on our apps. Additionally, the company is providing specialists with more specific information so they can evaluate and comprehend our methods.”

Meta is trying to be more accountable, transparent, and open to show the audience that they care for users’ privacy. Nowadays with changing technologies and advancements in the field of Generative AI, it is obvious that users are more concerned about privacy concerns. The platforms ensure that these technologies are created responsibly, and businesses should be more transparent about how their systems operate and interact freely across sectors of business, government, and civil society. Giving you more control and knowledge over the stuff you see is the first step in achieving this.

What Effect Do AI Predictions Have on Recommendations?

Since Meta’s AI systems are able to determine how important a given item might be to you, it can be displayed more rapidly. For instance, sharing a post is frequently a sign that you found it interesting, therefore one feature our computers consider is anticipating that you would share a post. As you might expect, there is no definitive way to estimate how useful a post will be to you. Therefore, the platform combines a wide range of forecasts, some based on behavior, and user feedback from surveys, to get as close as possible to the proper content.

Meta for some time has been developing and advocating the publication of a system of cards. These provide information about how systems function in a way that is understandable to folks without a profound understanding of technology. The 22 system cards for Instagram and Facebook provide details on the ranking of material by Meta’s AI systems. Also, some of the predictions each system makes about the content that may be most pertinent to you and the controls you can use to further customize your experience. The places where people go to find material from the accounts or individuals, they follow include Feed, Stories, Reels, and other surfaces. The AI systems that suggest “unconnected” material from users, organizations, or accounts that they don’t follow are also covered by the system cards. Here is a more thorough explanation of the AI that powers content recommendations.

In accordance with the company’s information Distribution Guidelines, they also utilize signals to identify harmful information and promptly delete it. Social Media platforms also employ signals to limit the dissemination of other forms of problematic or subpar content. Here are a few illustrations of the signals the company employs to do this. But there is a limit to how much the platform can reveal without risk. While the company wants to be open and honest about how they work to prevent harmful content from appearing in people’s feeds, they also need to be careful not to provide any signals that would make it simpler for users to get around our security measures.

Of course, simply because Meta post material on their website does not guarantee that everyone will find it. Because of this, the company allows you to view information about the reasons why platform systems thought certain material would be relevant for users as well as the various sorts of activity and inputs that might have contributed to that prediction from within apps. Meta previously launched the “Why Am I Seeing This?” feature for some Feed content and all Facebook and Instagram advertisements. In the coming weeks, Meta will be expanding it to the Instagram Reels tab, Explore, and Facebook Reels. The users will be able to click on a specific reel to see more details about how the machine learning models that create and present the reels you view may have been influenced by your prior behavior. Meta's AI using user activity

Expanding Your Toolkit for Customizing Your Experience

Users can customize their experiences on apps like Facebook and Instagram by creating centralized places for customizing controls. Feed Preferences and Suggested Content Control Centers can be accessed through the menu or Settings. Instagram is testing a new feature allowing users to indicate interest in recommended reels. It will be allowing for more content to be shown.

Providing Researchers With Better Tools

The company believes in an open approach to research and innovation. Particularly in transformative AI technologies, which is better than leaving the know-how to big tech companies. Over the past decade, they have released over 1,000 AI models, libraries, and data sets for researchers to benefit from their computing power. In the coming weeks, they will roll out a new suite of tools called Meta Content Library and API. It will include data from public posts and Instagram accounts. Researchers can access these tools through partners with expertise in secure data sharing, such as the University of Michigan’s Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research.

Meta wants to come clean to its users by showing them the platform is taking steps to provide them with the little details required. Also, the company wants the world to know that there is nothing fishy in the platform’s privacy concerns. It explains the opportunity that AI is bringing to business.
