Now, with Spotify adding offline playback support to Wear OS, we are starting to see these features take effect. The new support will give users the ability to download music and listen offline. It will also let you pair a Bluetooth headset and leave your phone behind.  

Android Central has recently reported that some users, in Europe and the US, on Reddit are reporting that this ability is already live on some Wear OS smartwatches.   

If you want it to work on your device, you’ll need to download the Wear OS Spotify app on your watch or phone. After installing the app, set it up and pair it with your Wear OS device account through a browser. You will then see a “Downloads tab” which means that the feature is now active.   

If not, some users on Reddit tried force closing Spotify while others reported setting a VPN to France. However, Spotify’s playlists can only be downloaded offline, on Wear OS, with a Premium subscription  

We have seen the new feature work on both the Mobvoi TicWatch Pro 3 and the Skagen Falster 3. The Wear OS’s app has simplified on the wrist where you can only download playlists to listen offline. And, if you want to download individual songs then you’ll have to manually put them into a playlist.   

You will be able to download music for offline listening on your smartwatch only if you have a Spotify Premium subscription.   

The features have also been rolled out to TicWatch E3, Fossil Sport Gen 4, TicWatch Pro 3, Oppo Watch, Fossil Gen 5 Carlyle, Misfit Vapor, TicWatch C2+, and Moto 360 3rd Gen.

Over the coming weeks, the feed will roll out globally on Android and iOS. The new feature will be accessible to everyone via a new bell icon on the top right of the home screen.   

If there is new content in the feed a blue dot will indicate it on the app. Besides, you will be able to add artists and podcasts by tapping the “Follow” button on their respective pages.  

“What’s New makes it easier than ever to catch all the latest songs and episodes from the creators you follow,” Spotify’s announcement says.

“Plus, it’s even updated in real-time, so you know you’ll get to listen to new content just as it’s released.”  

The feed will help keep up-to-date with podcasts although it works with music releases.   

Despite the app’s push into podcasting as a service, music-focused service meant that it is not well suited for listening to episodic content.   

Meanwhile, apps that are dedicated to the podcast are designed around chronological feeds. This makes it easier for the users to see when new episodes are available.   

Hopefully, Spotify’s new feature “What’s New” will bring some of these benefits to the app.

To reach this goal, Spotify has recently announced its acquisition of Podz. Podz is a startup that’s trying to solve the problem of podcast discovery and make the experience even better.    

The company said, “We believe that Podz’s technology will complement and accelerate Spotify’s focused efforts to drive discovery, deliver listeners the right content at the right time, and accelerate the growth of the category worldwide.”  

Since most podcasts are longer than 30 minutes, so browsing for new shows is hard. To tackle this problem, Podz is developing what they call “the first audio newsfeed.” Here, the present users with 60-second clips from various shows.   

Podz makes these small clips using its machine learning model trained on audio in consultation with audio editors for more than 100,000 hours.  

Before the acquisition, Podz had raised $2.5 million in pre-seed funding from Canaan Partners, M13, Charge Ventures, and Humbition.  

This acquisition is proving to be yet another sign of Spotify’s ambition to take over the podcasting market, and audio entertainment.
