South Korea’s SK Telecom or SKT has launched a new 5G cloud service. This service supports edge computing along with Amazon Web Services (AWS). SKT’s new edge computing service will allow businesses to build low latency applications based on AWS Wavelength.

By connecting applications to AWS Wavelength, application traffic will not need to hop through regional sites and the internet, reducing network latency.

The first AWS Wavelength zone has already been deployed in the central region of South Korea of Daejeon. They are also planning to expand their infrastructure to other areas in 2021.

Both the companies have been testing this service with 20 customers since February 2020. It also included a well-known food delivery app Woowa Brothers. Baedal Minjok has also been using its service to power its outdoor food delivery robot.

Matt Garman, vice-president of sales and marketing at AWS, said with AWS Wavelength on SKT’s 5G network, South Korea will be able to develop “applications that take advantage of ultra-low latencies to address use cases like machine learning inference at the edge, smart cities and smart factories, and autonomous vehicles – all while using the same familiar AWS services, API, and tools to deploy them to 5G networks worldwide”.

Ryu Young-sang, President of SKT’s mobile network operator services, said “by leveraging AWS services and multi-access edge computing, the telco hopes to create and expand innovative business models in the gaming, media services, logistics, and manufacturing industries.”

Besides SKT, many other telcos in the Asia-Pacific region such as Japan’s Rakuten, India’s Bharti Airtel, Australia’s Telstra, and China Mobile are also moving towards the deployment of the telco edge.
